Customer Review: BEWARE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL ...PLUS SYSTEM HOG

Beware the "Auto-renewal" feature. Notice of this is buried in the license. They charged a credit card that I'd opted out of using due to a 10% rate increase. There was no notice of this until after the deed was done. No email request asking if my billing information was correct--nothing. When I called I was told that is the way the software is setup. It automatically updates at the end of the year and directly charges your credit card! There was no opportunity to opt out during setup.

In additional this software is a system hog and slowed down my computer so that it was not usable while updates load or scans run which occurs frequently.

This product worked well for me until I got a virus. Then I called in for help and was told I had to pay $89.95 in order to remove the virus. Not a great deal when the product is supposed to protect you from the virus in the first place. but the representative with a very heavy accent told me the product only works against "low level viruses" and I had a "high level virus" and that is not covered by the product. Really? Because I looked at the box and it does not mention that.

So after much complaining they gave me the $89.95 service for free. Another representative attached to my computer and said he removed the virus and I had a three day guarantee. When the virus showed up again on the fourth day I was told I have to pay to get it removed. Even though it was the same virus, and even though they did not completely remove it the first time. Same virus, same name, and I only used the PC once during those 4 days to look up some directions on Mapquest, but they told me it was a different virus. Really?

So I loaded Norton 360. It found the virus, but it could not remove it, but it gave directions on how I could remove it manually. Which I did. Everything worked fine for over a week. At which time I was not felling 100% comfortable this nasty virus was really gone, even though it appeared gone. So I wiped out my hard drive and reloaded everything back on from scratch.

The Norton program seems to work very well in the background. I like it and will NEVER go back to Mcafee.

In the trend towards simplicity in applications, Web sites, and devices, such as the iPod, the complexity of this McAfee product is as beguiling as the messages it delivers up with high frequency. McAfee expects you to learn the two dozen or so settings for how you want the product to operate, which your tempted to master only to (unsuccessfully) stop its incessant messages popping up.
